Jill Hillary - AVI Volunteer   "This little fellow is 8 months old and only weighs 4 kilo. When his mother handed him to me I thought he was only about 3 months old, it wasn't until I mixed a bottle of infant formula and went to put it in his mouth that I realised he was older as he suddenly became alert instead of lethargic when he saw the bottle reached out and snatched the bottle from me his little hands shaking and he held tight until it was finished and then rested on my shoulder.

His mother said that her milk dried up when he was 5 mths old, she has fed him since then with whatever she could find??

His mother had travelled from the mountains that day to seek help from us. He had had nothing to eat or drink for 13 hours. We sent her home with enough formula for 1 month and money for transportation to come back in 4 weeks to have him checked and rec another months supply of milk. Two weeks later, she arrived back with him he was dehydrated again and extreamly ill with a chest infection. The hospital wanted to admit him but when that happens here a family member must remain with the patient 24/7 as there in no 'nursing' in the hospital. His mother was unable to do this as she has 7 other children waiting for her at home and needed to get back before dark. So off she went with paracetemol and a course antibiotics. I do not expect him to survive..."
